We have started the dreadful and stressful exam period, yay…
Okay, to be honest, I don’t hate exams because I’m home early and I know that when they’re done I will have a long vacation. But exams do bring a lot of stress which I still can’t handle after 15 exam periods (yes I counted them). Either way, my days during exams look a lot different than normal weekdays so I decided to put it all in a daily routine.
First of all, my alarm clock changes every day depending on the exam I have. For example, my first exam this week is German. I get everything that we have to learn and I am confident that this will be a good exam so my alarm will go off at 7AM like on a usual school day. I probably will revise the vocabulary a little but it will be a calm morning. BUT if I have my sciences exam, oh god. I find everything that I’ve seen this semester very interesting and I don’t mind studying it but it is so much! This is one of those mornings where I will wake up at 5AM or 6AM depending on how confident I am about my knowledge.
After I wake up, I go straight to the bathroom to do my skincare. Throughout the school year, I tend to start neglecting my skincare routine, out of laziness. And then when exams start I suddenly pick it up again, probably because it makes me feel more refreshed and awake. Or to compensate the fact that I will not put on any makeup and just wander through the school looking like a zombie… My hair will be in a bun or a ponytail, it rarely happens that I let my hair hang loose during an exam because I will just be annoyed by it the whole time.
Something you need to know about me is that I am a big breakfast person. I love breakfast and I couldn’t live without it. Even though I am used to eating a good breakfast when I have an exam I have to force myself to eat one small thing. It is the reason that my tummy always makes the sound of a whale while I am making my exam, I don’t think I am alone. I usually eat oatmeal just because I know that a little bit of it will fill me up better than something else.
When I am done eating I go back to the bathroom, brush my teeth, put on deodorant blah blah blah. And then I start wondering what time it is, it’s never too late but I get a panic attack when I’m one minute off schedule. This is usually the moment where I start running through the house thinking that I’m gonna be late, even though I am always way too early. Then I take my bike and start racing to school.
Usually, my friend Jana and I always wait for each other in the morning. But since 7 out of my 11 exams will be oral exams and we all have different times to be there, I will arrive at school alone. At this moment I start accepting that I know what I know and if it’s not enough then that is my own fault, I’d love to say I don’t have that much stress but most of the time I expect the worst and I am convinced that I will fail 😦 Once I get out of the exam, I’m fine haha.
When I get home I immediately take the stuff that I need for the next exam and I will eat something because as I said, my breakfast wasn’t exactly filling. Then I usually call my best friend and start telling her about my exam and she tells me about hers. The past years I have succeeded in putting my phone away for a long time so that is what I do to get my focus. After that, I start studying. I always try to start as early as possible, because once it gets a little late (and then I mean like 8pm) I can’t function anymore. I’ve said once before that I am a morning person and that counts for studying too. Are you guys people that study better during the day, or at night? Let me know because I’m curious about this.
Around 4pm I usually get into a little dip where all of my concentration is gone. Then I start walking around the house or I go outside for a little while, just anything to relax my mind. When I get out of the dip I get back to studying and at this time I have to hope that I know most of it because in a few hours I am done… I am glad that I know that in the evening I cant properly study anymore, that’s why I always keep the easiest or least complex things as last. Because if I have to do those things later in the evening, I won’t have to worry that I missed out on a big important thing.
During the school year, I go to sleep at different hours every night. One night it will be 22pm (hasn’t happened in a while), the other it’ll be 2am… But when it’s the exams, I somehow get into this routine where I go upstairs and get ready for bed around 10pm and I go to sleep at 11pm. If I wouldn’t do this I’d probably pass out during the exam, because I can not handle a lack of sleep.
Other things that happen during exams:
- I suddenly start drinking a lot of water, something that I’m never good at.
- At moments where I lose my focus, I start playing the piano and guitar because I don’t have my phone with me. If I don’t pay attention, there will easily pass a few hours before I get back to studying.
- I get the urge to clean my room and clean out my closets and basically things that take in way too much time. We’ve been talking about this a lot at school and I relate A LOT.
- I become a professional planner, or so it seems. Actually, my desk is just covered in to-do lists, but I do seem a lot more organized.
